Coco’s Spotlight - Wen Hui
"Good design shouldn't be expensive. It should make life better."
Meet Wen Hui,
an architect with a quiet conviction that good design belongs to everyone. Calmly confident and endlessly curious, she is one of the minds shaping Beyondto Co. into the creative home it is today.
For those who don't know you yet, tell us a little about yourself in one line.
: The short answer is, I'm an architect.
What keeps you in this field? Why do you do what you do?
: It is easy to forget sometimes because I have been an architect for so long. But l believe everyone deserves good design. It should not be expensive, and it can make a positive difference in people's lives.
Why specifically architecture?
: (laughs) Honestly, I don't really know. I wanted to study interior design, but l wasn't sure what the difference was. Then I started studying architecture, and I knew l had made the right choice.
Every profession has its myths. What is one thing people often misunderstand about your work?
: One sentence that always triggers me is when people say, "You're an architect, right? You just draw, right?" For the record, we don't just draw.
So what do architects really do?
: We design, but we are also the contract administrators and the submission people. We take responsibility for the things we submit. That's the short answer.
" This year, we set up a new company focused on design and build, especially interior design. It is a new territory for us, and it feels like growth. Like we are no longer stagnant, but moving in new directions. "
What about a smaller, more personal win?
: I managed to work while spending five weeks in Scotland. Before doing it, it felt impossible. Now that I know it is possible, the future feels brighter for me.
What inspires you outside of architecture?
: One day, I would love to live in a small house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and mountains.
Any hobbies that keep you grounded?
: Camping. Does that count? (laughs)
Do you have a favourite spot in Beyondto Co.?
: Definitely outside, the Beer Garden. That is where I like to unwind.
I love seeing people enjoy the space we have created. There is something special about watching others feel comfortable and inspired here.
What is one lesson you have learned that you would tell your younger self?
: Being good at studying does not mean you will succeed in life. Success takes creativity, curiosity, and life skills. These are things you only learn by doing and by connecting with people.
Lastly, If you had a theme song that played every time you walked into Beyondto Co., what would it be?
: Ain't No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephant. Because honestly, there really isn't. (smiles)
Between sketches, site visits, and quiet moments at the Beer Garden, Wen Hui reminds us that good design is about care, not cost. Her grounded philosophy continues to shape the spaces we share, one thoughtful line at a time.
